Knjige za ljeto

Mogu vam preporučiti dvije relativno nove knjige.

1. Prva je How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life: An Unexpected Guide to Human Nature and Happiness. Autor je poznati ekonomist Russ Roberts, čiji website/blog je ovdje. Ima i poznati podcast ECONTALK, “My weekly podcast where I interview authors, economists, innovators, and people from all walks of life. Past guests include Milton Friedman, Thomas Piketty, Christopher Hitchens, Marc Andreessen, Paul Romer, Nassim Taleb, Mike Munger, and the potato chip guy.

Kaže: “I take the ideas in Smith’s little-known masterpiece, The Theory of Moral Sentiments and apply them to the modern world—lessons for work, family, friendship, and how to live the good life.

O knjizi:

“Adam Smith was not just an economist; he also had penetrating insights into human nature that informed his rich, subtle, and revolutionary approach to moral philosophy. Russ Roberts combines a deep understanding of what Smith was on about with a fluent writing style to bring out the surprisingly modern implications of Smith’s thinking.”
—MATT RIDLEY, author of The Rational Optimist

“A great book. Makes you feel better about life, humanity, and yourself. Like having a conversation and a scotch with Adam Smith, or even better, Russ Roberts.”
—NASSIM TALEB, author of The Black Swan

I jedan review s Amazona: “I’m not usually in the habit of reading books on 18th century economist-philosopher’s 2nd most famous work, but I like Russ Roberts a lot, and gave it a chance. Glad I did. Russ is thoughtful, and comes across as a genuinely good person. Adam Smith is surprisingly prescient for someone writing in 1759.

Long-time fans of econtalk or Cafe Hayek won’t be surprised to know that Russ weaves in thoughts on emergent order, Fredrick Hayek, and the 2008 financial crisis, and the book is better for it in my opinion.

Finally, based on the one existing review (as of this time), I was expecting a heavy dose of the Talmud (not a bad thing), but I thought that review overstated it. Russ mentions it, but he also mentions Hume, Darwin, Hayek, Einstein, Warren Buffett, etc. Above all, this is exactly what the title says: an unexpected guide to human nature and happiness. Recommended

2. Jedna čak i malo više ‘za plažu’ (iako ni gornja nije teška) je The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry: A Novel.

“Zevin has done something old-fashioned and fairly rare these days. She has written an entertaining novel, modest in its scope, engaging and funny without being cloying or sentimental. On top of all that, it is marvelously optimistic about the future of books and bookstores and the people who love both.”
—The Washington Post

  2. Dealing with China by Hank Paulson

‘’DEALING WITH CHINA takes the reader behind closed doors to witness the creation and evolution and future of China’s state-controlled capitalism.

Hank Paulson has dealt with China unlike any other foreigner. As head of Goldman Sachs, Paulson had a pivotal role in opening up China to private enterprise. Then, as Treasury secretary, he created the Strategic Economic Dialogue with what is now the world’s second-largest economy. Over his career, Paulson has worked with scores of top Chinese leaders, including Xi Jinping, China’s most powerful man in decades.’’

    Odlicna knjiga od odlicnog Hanka.

Outliers: The Story of Success Paperback by Malcolm Gladwell

‘’…overturns conventional wisdom about genius to show us what makes an ordinary person an extreme overachiever.’’ Why do some people achieve so much more than others? Can they lie so far out of the ordinary?

In this provocative and inspiring book, Malcolm Gladwell looks at everyone from rock stars to professional athletes, software billionaires to scientific geniuses, to show that the story of success is far more surprising, and far more fascinating, than we could ever have imagined.

Irrationally yours: on missing socks, pick-up lines and other existential puzzles by Dan Ariely

Three-time New York Times bestselling author Dan Ariely teams up with legendary The New Yorker cartoonist William Haefeli to present an expanded, illustrated collection of his immensely popular Wall Street Journal advice column, “Ask Ariely”.

Ariely applies this scientific analysis of the human condition in his “Ask Ariely” Q & A column in the Wall Street Journal, in which he responds to readers who write in with personal conundrums ranging from the serious to the curious: What can you do to stay calm when you’re playing the volatile stock market? What’s the best way to get someone to stop smoking? How can you maximize the return on your investment at an all-you-can-eat buffet? Is it possible to put a price on the human soul? Can you ever rationally justify spending thousands of dollars on a Rolex?

Readers will laugh, learn, and most importantly gain a new perspective on how to deal with the inevitable problems that plague our daily life.

Fenomenalan lik, psiholog.

Barbarians At The Gate by Bryan Burrough

The battle for the control of RJR Nabisco in the Autumn of 1988, which became the largest and most dramatic corporate takeover in American history.

Klasik. Uzbudljivo, napeto, fenomenalno.

  3. Pošto je ovo primarno blog o financijama evo dvije duhovite knjige o wall streetu :

Navodno ga buffet smatra (kako piše wsj) drugim najboljim autorom o wall streetu

Malo “teža ” tema, knjiga opisuje konferenciju u Bretton Woods i ustoličenje dolara kao glavne svjetske valute
Benn Steil: the battle of Bretton Woods

Cochran, Harpeding: 10 000 year explosion – how civilization accelerated human evolution

Gregory Clark: A farewell to Alms, a brief economic history of the world
